St. Ursanne's Green Man by John Howe

In surfing for new and wonderful Green Man artists and sculptors,  I ran across John Howe, illustrator: http://www.john-howe.com/portfolio/gallery/details.php?image_id=4238  who created the fabulous Green Man below:
2007.06.24 - Saint-Ursanne: Green Man

St. Ursanne, from what I am reading, is a charming, medieval town in Switzerland:Map of Saint-Ursanne, Switzerland
St. Ursanne: http://europeforvisitors.com/switzaustria/articles/st_ursanne_jura.htm

St. Ursanne seems to be  photograph and postcard perfect.  But, I digress.  John Howe's sculpture is amazing as well as his other artwork.  A link to his biography: http://www.john-howe.com/blog/biography/formations/ and an excellent blog post on trees: http://www.john-howe.com/blog/2014/03/29/the-memory-of-trees/ and his portfolio:http://www.john-howe.com/portfolio/gallery/

I am so very grateful to discover this artist.
Enjoy.

The Green Man and the Trees

ents[1]

When discussing the Green Man, conversations often branch out into conversations of the Green Man and trees.  Some thoughts turn to the infamous "Ents" in Tolkien lore, tree people and the worshiping of trees.  An article on Ents can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ent

This is fabulous renditon from:  http://lawrencegarcia.org/tolkiens-mythology-the-recovery-of-wonder-for-creation/ents1/

Tree people are a world-wide archetype. Much of ancient Celtic and Druid lore is devoted to tree worship.  Here's a link to the "wisdom of trees:" http://merganser.math.gvsu.edu/myth/trees.html

Here's an excellent article on Myths, Legends and Trees: http://www.nativetreesociety.org/myths/index_myths.htm
